Editorial Policy

Purpose and scope
Our core editorial focus is World War II; we also provide contextual, evidence-based short-form military history explainers, microhistories, and analytical features through WarCommons Now. Our obligation is to the truth: we commit to reporting that is accurate, fair, independent, and clearly labeled. Our founding principle is that no AI is used at WarCommons, not for writing, research, editing, fact-checking, or any other part of the editorial process.

Accuracy and verification

We verify facts before publication by checking reporting against multiple reliable sources and original documents whenever possible. Raw tips and single-source claims require corroboration before they appear on the site. Analysis and interpretation are permitted but must be clearly labeled as analysis. Headlines and lead paragraphs reflect verified facts and do not overstate or sensationalize. Sources are attributed directly in the story or in an attribution note when practicable.

Independence and funding

Editorial decisions are made in‑house and are free from political, commercial, or other outside influence. We disclose our funding model openly: membership revenue and direct support from the founder. Sponsored content, paid partnerships, or commercial projects are accepted only when editorial independence is preserved and such content is clearly labeled as sponsored or promoted. The author must disclose any financial or personal relationships that could reasonably be seen to affect coverage.

Transparency and sources

We identify sources whenever doing so does not place people at risk. When anonymity is granted to a source, we explain the reason for anonymity in the story. We link to primary documents and supporting evidence whenever available. Conflicts of interest involving the author or contributors are disclosed on the relevant story and recorded in our internal conflicts log. The author bylines include role and a short bio on the masthead.

Corrections, updates, and accountability

When new facts emerge we update stories and add a clear timestamped note describing the change. When we have published an error we issue a correction that explains what was wrong, what we have changed, and when the correction was made. Corrections are easy to find on the corrected story and are included in our public corrections log. To submit a correction, email info@warcommons.com. For unresolved concerns about editorial practice, contact contact@warcommons.com.

Ethical standards, legal notices, and governance

We do not publish plagiarized, fabricated, or knowingly misleading material. We avoid gratuitous sensationalism and respect the dignity and privacy of people we cover, balancing public interest with individual rights. We comply with applicable copyright and data protection laws. For copyright takedowns or legal notices use info@warcommons.com. Serious ethical or legal questions are reviewed by our editorial leadership and, where appropriate, by an internal review panel; outcomes are recorded and disclosed when they affect public trust.

Implementation and review

Editors are responsible for enforcing this policy day to day. New staff and contributors receive editorial training and a copy of this policy. We review this policy periodically and update it to reflect newsroom practice, legal requirements, and reader expectations.
