That meant that I had to stop reporting on the September publications. However, for October this thread returns!

We're starting October with an absolutely mind boggling topic: Operation Vegetarian. World War II saw some crazy operations that were planned and this is one of them.

Every once in a while I'll be sharing what I'm writing about for the upcoming publications. This is something that I'll do exclusively for the Founding Members. In YANK, our weekly newsletter there is also always a short look ahead to the upcoming week, but that's more about what types or articles are planned for that upcoming week.

Here you will get a more in-depth look behind the scenes.

Saturday September 5, 2026, we will publish a new article for the Field Command, the paid members section of the website. The Field Command Sitrep is a look into why Hitler never actually used poison gas or other nerve agents during the war. During World War I Germany even pioneered and scaled up large-scale (lethal) gas warfare on the battlefield.

Some of the reasons may actually surprise you! I was quite surprised to read how Hitler himself felt about this.

Why Hitler Never Used Poison Gas in World War II

Published this Saturday, don't miss it.

Hi everyone! My name is Chris Chaffin. I’m an independent historian with a particular interest in WWII and the China-Burma-India Theater.

For the past year or so, majority of my research has focused around my great-grandfather, S/Sgt Pasquale Cichino, who served as an armorer-gunner with the 373rd Bomb Squadron, 308th Bomb Group in China. What started as an attempt to understand his personal military service has grown into a investigation much larger than I expected involving crew records, mission history, aircraft, decorations, photographs, wartime documents, and firsthand accounts from the families of the men he served with.

I recently discovered WarCommons through a connection with Nick on LinkedIn and decided to join. I’m looking forward to meeting other WWII researchers and historians, sharing what I’ve uncovered, and hopefully learning from everyone here as well.

Looking forward to being part of the community!

By sheer scale, attrition, and strategic impact, this is clearly the biggest deciding factor on the war (But not fully as Japan wasn't involved) It absorbed and destroyed roughly 75% to 80% of all German Wehrmacht casualties, effectively breaking the back of the Axis war machine. But sheer scale and casualties is not always easy to calculate. Obviously most deciding campaign is Operation Barbarossa and it's failure to bring quick victory and start industrial scale of war of attrition. But what do you guys think? Eastern front perhaps deserves it's own topic too

Hello from Finland :) With ADHD passion to WWII!

Spark to WWII came from seeing Saving Private Ryan as a kid probably 10 or so, watched it in secret after bedtime. That tiger tank was so cool! Albeit as a kid I always thought it was a Sherman tank but heh, don't think they really told what tank it was in the movie properly. My family of course got ties to war as we fought Russia in WWII. Winter war and Continuation war and Lapland war. From my dad's side 10 brothers went to war but only 3 came back. Not much really was talked or passed down to my generation, sort of don't speak thing. And now everyone dead. So I don't know details sadly. Someone told me my family may have had 1 of those 10 take part in Waffen-SS (the one finnish send) but no idea if that's true or not. Probably when my parents die I will do family history search. Until then it's just history without details :)
